Now that the weather has turned a tad chilly here in CA my weekend drink has moved from Vodka drinks to Whiskey drinks. My husband is a huge Irish Whiskey lover and I have always had to plug my nose to even take a sip. I guess I am growing up because now my favorite weekend drink is an Old-Fashioned with Homemade Honey Syrup.
These are super easy to make and will fill your belly with a nice warming sensation. However, insert warning, they are stronger than your typical glass of wine so be mindful of your pace.
In its most basic form, an old-fashioned is a combination of sugar, bitters, whiskey and a bit of water in a specialty glass with ice. When doing research on how to make the best old-fashioned I learned there are countless ways to enjoy this classic drink. I do not like to complicate my evening so I opted for a very basic version.
The two musts in my opinion when making an old-fashioned are 1) only use rye whiskey and 2) always use big ice cubes. We do not buy the BEST rye on the market and we do not buy the WORST. This rye is our favorite and you can find it at most grocery stores or large liquor stores. In regards to ice, the one thing you want to keep in mind is the smaller the ice cube the faster it will melt. Some people might like that but we like using big ice cubes so the old fashioned does not get watered down. These are the ones we use.
It is not NECESSARY but it is nice to use a cocktail shaker when making an old-fashioned. This is the one we use. If you do not have a cocktail shaker then just use anything that has a lid.
Some people like to add a slice of orange peel to their old-fashioned but we skip that part. I hated wasting an orange just so my drink looked pretty lol.
Never say never folks. I truly never thought I would like whiskey. YES, I did like seven and seven when I was young and stupid.

Old Fashioned with Homemade Honey Syrup
- Cocktail Shaker
- Jar with a lid
- 3 ounces rye whiskey
- 4 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 ounces honey syrup
- 1 cup honey
- 3/4 cup warm water
- Fill your cocktail shaker with regular sized ice. Pour your rye whiskey and honey syrup into the shaker. Next, add in your dashes of bitters, no more and no less. Too many dashes or not enough can really alter the taste of this drink.
- Put the lid back on your shaker and shake, shake, shake. This gets your liquid nice and cold and also mixed together well.
- Place your large ice cubes into a short cocktail glass and then with the strainer on pour your liquid into the glass. We like to have two each so we always make a double batch in the shaker and leave it in the refrigerator while we sip on our first 🙂
- Warm-up your water on the stove. Do not boil it or you will kill all the health benefits of the honey. Just make it warm enough that it is warm to the touch. A good rule of thumb is to not go over 110F.
- Put your honey in a mason jar or any other jar that has a lid.
- Pour your warm water into the jar with the honey and use a spoon to mix it up. Do not put the lid on and shake it. Once the honey is mixed in with the water and cooled down a bit you can put the lid on.
- We keep ours in the refrigerator. Give it a good couple of shakes once you take it out of the refrigerator before you use it each time. It can keep 7 days in the refrigerator.
